Guerilla, Writes.

The Guerilla Journalist is a peaceful social activist who desires to inspire youths to pick up unique hobbies, gain different perspectives and take ownership of their individual creative space. Armed with his beloved, pre-loved Nikki Victoria, the Guerilla Journalist walks the streets of Singapore with a mission.

Using his mediocre photography skills, amateurish editing and unpolished writing abilities, he hopes to push the apathetic and indifferent to 'get up, get a life and get interested.' In his world, the word 'amateur' is a compliment, to suggest that another young one has overcome the fear-inducing stigma of labels and started out on a long and ardous journey to joyous discovery and honed perfection.

To be able to say at the end of it all, " Yes, I chased the dream."

The Guerilla writes because he can.

The Guerilla writes because he loves to.

Most importantly, the Guerilla writes because it's necessary.

Different Notes for Different Folks

It may not be music to everyone’s ears but an event held monthly at the Singapore Art Museum is definitely making some funky noise. Coined Originals Only Open Mike (OOOM), the three-hour long event allows aspiring songwriters to perform their compositions and receive feedback on areas to improve on.

Organised by the Singapore Art Café, a not-for-profit organisation, the event allows 10 to 15 songwriters to perform one or two songs in front of a live audience of 60 to 80 people. 15 OOOMs have been held since its inception in August 2008.

Jonathan How, the founder of Singapore Art Cafe, is a connoisseur of music and visual arts. When asked about his motivation for running OOOM, he said that he loved the environment of strangers coming together to share a common passion for music.

“Witnessing the musical growth of singers who perform regularly at OOOM is a joy. So is interacting with the OOOM community, whether [they are] performers or listeners,” Jonathan said. “[I have] no significant pains at the moment.”

Not all who attend the event are songwriters. Some simply come to listen to the unique and fresh local sounds which have become the hallmark of OOOM.

“I’ve attended 3 OOOMs and it’s amazing to discover so many talented Singaporean singer-songwriters,” said Zhuo Xin Yong, a first-year engineering undergraduate from Nanyang Technological University. “I was impressed by this male performer whose voice was a mix of the signature tones of Jason Mraz and Damien Rice.”

Showing their support for the performers’ explorations in music, there is only encouraging applause at the end of each song, and no rowdy boos from an immature crowd. The audience conducted themselves like the patrons of a museum quietly appreciating a piece of fine art.

First-time attendee Lu Zhong Hao echoes this thought, “I think this a good platform for singer-songwriters to hone their craft. They can develop their confidence and learn from fellow musicians as well.”

Present at every OOOM is a musically accomplished guest mentor who provides insightful tips to the budding songwriters. A local artist is also featured every month to showcase their musicianship and songwriting prowess.

Supported by venue partner Singapore Art Museum and equipment partner Maestro Guitars, the sound system is managed by voluntary audio technicians. The performers can utilise the synthesizer or acoustic guitar provided - or bring their own instruments.

Promising talents spotted at OOOM@SAM may be invited onto radio station Power 98’s Acoustic Lounge programme to perform their self-written songs.
